Workshops
Our workshops are run with limited group size for safety and maximum input to participants and you will be progressed through your learning and skills at an appropriate pace in order that you can build self confidence.

As with our terms and conditions of entry to Vobster Quay, you should be able to confidently swim 400m continuously in a pool before signing up for one of these workshop as you will be expected to be able to swim 50m swims when practicing some of these skills.

We have a limited stock of hire wetsuits, so if you don't have a wetsuit currently, you will be able to borrow one of these when attending the workshop. If you have any questions with regard to whether this workshop is for you or on any aspect of open water swimming please contact Richard Smith.
INTRODUCTION TO OPEN WATER SWIMMING WORKSHOP
Take your first steps into open water swimming
These two hour workshops are designed specifically to build self confidence and to introduce swimmers to the key skills of swimming in open water in a fun and safe way, as a stepping stone into regular open water swimming.

Whether you are a pool swimmer wanting to have a go at open water swimming or a multisport athlete looking to move into open water racing, these workshops will deliver a perfect introduction. The crystal clear water and open water facilities offered by Vobster Quay provide a safe and picturesque venue for TRIbal Triathlon's performance coach, Richard Smith, to introduce you to the following areas during the workshop:

  • Open water swimming safety
  • Kit, wetsuits, goggles etc and how to select what's right for you
  • Cold water acclimatisation, entering open water safely & building confidence
  • Introduction to key open water swimming skills inc. breathing techniques, sighting and navigating
  • Next steps to enjoying your open water swim experience

Our unique 5-week group swimming workshops are designed for those new or relatively new to open water swimming. Choose between novice or intermediate / advanced sessions to suit your experience level...

NOVICE OPEN WATER
GROUP COACHING SESSIONS
TIME: 18:00 - 19:00
These sessions are designed for those new or relatively new to open water swimming, who would like to develop both their confidence and skills.

Working in a small group you will develop and progress key open water skills of breathing techniques, sighting and navigation, turns, swimming confidently in a group and even skills or drafting and mass starts for those looking to take part in open water swimming and multi sport events.

Skills progression and learning will be tailored to each individual, whilst sharing the fun and experience of working in a small group environment.

By the end of the programme you will feel confident that you can swim competently and safely in most open water environments and will be ready to either swim independently or progress to the intermediate / advanced programme with some practice.
INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED OPEN WATER
GROUP COACHING SESSIONS
TIME: 19:00 - 20:00
These sessions are designed for more experienced swimmers and multisport athletes looking to develop advanced skills; racing skills and open water swim fitness.

Working in a small group you will develop and progress building on a foundation of key open water skills, breathing techniques, sighting and navigation and turns to work more specifically on the advanced skills of drafting; race pacing and strategy; decision making; advanced sighting and navigation, swim entries and exits into transition.

Skills progression and learning will be tailored to each individual, whilst sharing the fun and experience of working in a small group environment. Swim pace will facilitate a range of abilities/age groups.

By the end of the programme you should feel well equipped to take on significant open water swim racing challenges and have the skills and confidence to take on mass start events and race well in challenging open water / multi sport races.

OPEN WATER SWIMMERS
IMPROVERS WORKSHOP
Take your open water swimming to the next level!
These two hour workshops are designed either as a direct progression from our very popular Introductory workshops or for those who have some experience of open water swimming but who are looking to improve their technique and skills.

The Improvers workshop will build on the basic skills of open water swimming, further developing breathing, sighting and navigation skills as well as introducing turns, group swimming, and pace control. Participants will be filmed so they can observe and where appropriate correct their own swimming and advice will be given on how to train for open water swimming more effectively.

By the end of this Improvers workshop swimmers should feel confident that they can swim both safely and competently in a range of open water environments and take a significant step along their own open water swimming journey towards health and fitness goals, competitive/challenge/charity events or just for sheer pleasure of swimming in the great outdoors.

OW SWIMMERS RACING SKILLS
& RACE PREP WORKSHOP
Take your open water swimming to the next level!
This exciting new open water swimming workshop is designed specifically for those preparing for and taking part in open water swimming and multisport events. The workshop assumes some experience of open water swimming and delivers a full range of skills and practices to enhance open water swimming performance.

The workshop introduction covers all aspects of race preparation from selecting event that suits your swimming ability, researching and recceing a swim course to race specific open water swimming training/prep sessions.

Participants will then get in the water and work through the following skills practically:

  • Positioning on the start line
  • Race starts, pace control and strategy
  • Advanced sighting and navigation
  • Drafting and group swimming
  • Turns
  • Pace control
  • Swim exits into T1 transition

By the end of this workshop swimmers should feel confident that they can effectively prepare and train for an open water swim or multisport event and take part effectively employing the skills learnt and practiced during the workshop.

Note the practical element of this course is skills based not speed based, however the course will require you to be able to swim in a group.
